The Show – Deluxe Edition is a six-song instrumental jazz EP by Alan Goldberg, built around the idea of incidental music — the music that surrounds a live performance but is not always part of the performance itself.
The project began with a short unused film-intro cue that Goldberg later expanded into “The Show: Redux.” From there, the concept grew into a full set of jazz combo pieces imagining the music before, during, and after a stage performance: the opening atmosphere, intermission, curtain call, finale, and afterparty.
About the Album
The Show – Deluxe Edition began with a forty-second piece of music written for a film intro. The filmmaker wanted something darker, but Alan Goldberg liked the cue and chose to finish it. That piece became “The Show: Redux” — a bright, upbeat instrumental that suggested the entrance music for a live stage performance.
That idea opened the door to a larger concept. Goldberg began imagining the music that exists around a show rather than inside the main performance: the audience settling in, the intermission rush, the lobby, the people checking their phones or finding refreshments, the final moments, the curtain call, and the afterparty.
The six instrumental jazz pieces were created during the pandemic, a time when live performance had largely gone quiet. Even then, Goldberg could still hear the feeling of a show in his head. The music uses a traditional jazz-combo palette — keys, bass, drums, saxophones, trumpet, and trombone — with a relaxed, happy, toe-tapping energy.
The result is incidental music with a purpose: a small imagined performance world, built from melody, rhythm, ensemble interplay, and the anticipation of gathering again.

Track Notes
The Show: Redux
The piece that started the project. Originally written as a short film-intro cue, it was later expanded into a bright jazz-combo opener — the sound of an audience settling in before the curtain rises.
Intermizzion: One
A fast intermission piece, imagining the restless energy of a break in the performance: people moving through the lobby, talking, stretching, refreshing, and preparing to return.
Intermezzo: Liscio
A smoother, slower intermission counterpart. Where “Intermizzion: One” captures motion and bustle, “Intermezzo: Liscio” reflects a more relaxed pause between acts.
Curtain Call
The moment after the performance, when the energy shifts from story to recognition. The piece imagines the performers returning, the audience responding, and the room beginning to release the experience.
Finale: Consumato
A closing statement for the imagined show. “Finale: Consumato” plays with the feeling of completion — the lights coming up, the last notes landing, and the event resolving.
Afterparty
The final release of the evening. “Afterparty” carries the music beyond the stage and into the social space that follows: relaxed, celebratory, and still moving.
